EmpireThrone Room

Throne Room in the Palace at Perot

Among the oldest of the nations of the world the Empire of Voernthia, at its peak, was the largest land nation on earth. Its founding in 0FV is recognized as the start year for many world calenders, especially among Northern intellectuals. Maintaining its dominance in the north for over 1000 years, it was the center for trade, commerce, and culture and was only surpassed in military cunning and mobility by the Kingdom of Tiber who fought several large and devastating wars against the might of the Empire and was the only power in history to survive military episodes agaisnt the Empire.

From the start the Empire it continued to stretch outward and eventually within 500 years it stretched to its largest extent and remained this size until the time of "The Shattering" where the empire, due to a coup shattered the central power of the Empire but all in due time.

His Royal Majesty, King Xalatos Chalemnes, the First Monarch of the Empire of Vorenthia

The history books of the Empire is chocked full of royals and theur Lords who did service to The Empire but the greatest figure in the history of the Empire would have to be its first soverignn, King of the First Dynasty, His Majesty Xalatos Chalemnes. He was famed for his intense ability to organize and rule the fledgling empire, so much so that no one, up to this day, has been able to organize and unite and merit such love from the people of the empire.

Xalatos was one of the few emperors to rule from the city of Harken (The modern day capital of the Central Kingdom of Orissa) where he was able to recieve news from the farthest corners of Treschia. He led troops in to battle only on two occasions. The first time was to counter an attack from raiders from the Momand Highlands and subjegate them. This was the start of the long, complicated, often violent history that plagued the relations between the Empire and its subjects in the Momand Highlands. The second battle was the more crucial of the two. The fate of the empire might have been decided here if it were not for the steadfastness of the King and his personal guard, The Battle of Northern Bank.

He died in the 57th year of his reign (57 AV) at the age of 89 and was buried under the palace at Harken. A special tomb was hewn out of the granite base of the hill on which the palace sat on. The tomb is far from the most glamarous tomb for an Empire Soverign however it is the most revered and remains so to this day, especially amoung the people of Harken. Of course, like most legendary kings, the story goes that he is only asleep in his tomb and that he will return when the Empire needs him most, but such things are thougth to be myth...for most ancient kings.

The First Capital at Harken

In the First Dynasty, the captial was located in the city of Harken which sat almost in the very middle of the Northen half of Treschia. Harken, until after the time of the shattering had never been a "great city" but was instead, in fact, built on a flood plain south of the river Ella. This would later prove to be the reason the capital was moved to the new location at Perot as it was sacked in 297 AV by the forces of the nation of Verandessa which sat upon the other side of the Eldar River (The Source of of the Ella River). However this left almost a 300 year period where the Empire ruled itself from Harken.

The benefit of being ruled from Harken was that it was a central location for the people of the Empire. It expanded pretty evenly and at any given time the distance from one end of the Empire to the capital was almost equal from the capital to the other end. The fledgling Empire was ruled well and in an incredible fashion organized itself smoothly, the only issue was that because it was in the middle of the continent it was surrounded on all sides by enemies, raiding parties, and even another kingdom or two. Most of its neighbors were independent city states however there were two exception, the Kingdom of Verandessa, ruled from Verand (behing the Sigurd Wall). The second exception was the Vorenthian Isles which continualy harassed the northern coasts of the continent from its safe heaven in the Isles, though frozen they were.

Even though the fledgling Empire at Harken (Later the Vorenthian Empire) was strong and proud, it was only a matter of time before there was a crack in its armor. That came in the East War of 294, after three rough years of fighting with its neighbor, the Despotate of Verandessa, the forces of the Empire were stretched to try to cover the river bank and keep the Verandessans out of the Empire. In the winter of 296 Countess Sushen of Falind, with the permission of the Despot at Verand (Despot Yungi) marched a force of 7,000 soldiers and in an unheard of winter offensive smashed through the Empire defenses on the River Eldar and moved northwest and by early spring had surronded the city. Within two weeks, she had smashed through the walls and taken the city. The Emperor (Emperor Horatio Chalemnes) had been able to successfully evacutae himself from the city and retreat to the plains city of Sentiza however when Harken fell it was felt across the empire. Soon after the battle the main Empire army retook the city and within 2 months had crushed the famed "Grand Army of the East" at the battle of Jea but the damage was done and the capital had fallen. Within 2 years a new site for a new capital had been found and construction began on Christmas Day, 300 on the city of Perot.
