The Republic of Formsdale remains the only principality on the southern end of the continent to never have come under the military occupation of the Kingdom of Tiber. Though by the treaty of Orbus signed in 1019 AV (746 FT), the city is technically under the governance of the King, it in practice retains its own authority and self-rule, the only state in the Kingdom to do so. It sits on the far southwest corner of the Kingdom holding a key naval passage around the Horn of Hones North. It maintains its own military contingent within the city, and does not allow Royal troops under arms within the city walls. They maintian a force of roughly 5,000 men-at-arms in the citys 2 castles, with another 7,000 trained militia soldiers in the local principality which could be called upon in the event of an emergency.
The city is governed by the "Lord Protector" alongside the Councl of Elders (23 of them). The Lord Protectorship is given to the head of the city's knights, the Order of Fomwen (The name of the cities great hero) which serves as the heads of the city guard and defender of the Principality of the South.
The Knights ans soldiers of Formsdale are some of the best trained and best armed force in the Kingdom, rivaling even the famed Royal "Dark-guards" who were the personal Military contingent of the King in Tiber. In addition to its well traines land forces, it maintians a very large, and very daunting naval force which constantly patrols the southern coasts keeping it free from pirates and enforcing the tariff laws of the Republic when ships enter within its waters. After 15 years of service a naval vessel is sold to the highest bidder, minus much of the key naval combat equipment which the Formens are known for. The bidding wars for such vessels are said to be bankrupting for people with small fortunes.
War of The Three Armies
In the year of 1011 AV (738 FT) most of the southern half of Treshia had fallen to the power of the Royal Kingdom and it had long cast its eyes to the only two other kingdoms on its borders, the Kingdom of Galos (The Galosan Stonelands) and the very wealthy Republic of Formsdale. An offer was sent to the two states, promising protection from the vast Vorenthain Empire and royal assistance in the case of military or political pressure from other possible enemies, if they would only join the Kingdom and swear an oath of submission to the ruler, King Harpus I.
Seeing this for what it was both states refused and instead signed The Concord of Companions, along with the Independent Kingdom of Honesia and the Republic fo Redwall, both across the sea, promising to protect one another and come to their aid if attacked. It was not long before the Concords article was enacted. Within a year (1012, AV (739 FT)) Formsdale could see the forces of the Kingdom begin to mass on its borders and the Galosians reported the same. When the blow came, it was quick and hard. Within 2 weeks the armies of the Kingdom had overrun the stone foothills and were besieging the city of Galos. Formsdale did fare better though as it was able to keep the armies of the Kingdom inland long enough to be able to land 1,000 men at Kenneth Hall, a Kingdom held city, and its key naval port in the south.
They almost lost their positions to Kingdom reinforcments until the Formens at Kenneth Hall were reinforced themselves by a force of 500 Honesians, and 337 Reddians. This shored up the badly needed troops to continue to repulse the Kingdom forces until they were eventually driven back to the sea in 1014 AV (741 FT). The City of Galos held out until 1015, for three years, until the city walls were finally breached and the Kingdoms armies of the East stormed the city. Only the Old City remained behind its ancient keep walls and needed supplies desperately.
Originally the Kingdom had expected the two small power to fall to its forces within a few weeks, 8 months at the most, but the protracted fight was draining its fighting strength and taking forces away from the real fight which was brewing in the North. The Vorenthian Empire, the archnemesis of the Kingdom for over 400 years, was preparing its forces to launch a sea attack to land troops across the Mouth of Treshia, as the land route was blocked by the High Pass Mountains and the Tiber fortresses there in. While preparing for the further defense of the North, troops were to be withdrawn from the southern front and redeployed to the North to defend agaisnt the deadlier opponent and by 1018, the "War of the Three Armies" was at a standstill.
The situation however in Galos was still dire and what was left of the city's leadership, forces, and citizens were running out of food and water behind the keep walls. An urgent letter was sent to the Formens from the Galosians, begging them to try to force the Kingdom to offer terms. In a daring move a combind force of Fromens, Honesians, and Reddians landed in force outside the city of Orbus, "The Gateway to the Great Lake" as it had become known. Not only did they surrondd the city, but the city was under threat of falling to the allied forces.
An ambassador from the capital Tiber was sent to Lord Protector, offering a compromise.
The Treaty of Orbus 1019 AV (746 FT)
A cease-fire was arranged in the Spring of 1019 AV which stipulated that the Allied forces would leave Orbus, on the condition that Kingdom forces withdrew from the Stonelands, and Formsdale Republic Territory. Along the entire border with Formsdale the Kingdom troops withdrew but they maintianed its positions in Galos until the signing of the peace treaty.
The Treaty stated that the Republic of Formsdale would sign itself as a protectorate (gaining all the benefits there in) to the Kingdom and pay an annual sum of 750 ounces of Gold to the Royal Treasury, in exchange the Republic would be allowed to retain its independence and be allowed home rule. The Kingdom of Galos were offered the same terms. Formsdale signed the treaty and the peace was reigned in on the First of May 1019. However the Royal troops entered into the Old City of Galos on May 2 taking the city and making the king of Galos little more then a figure head. To this day it remains the unruliest part of the Kingdom but they haveyett to spring into open rebellion.
The Lord Protector Currently (1123)
The current Lord Protector is Count Gregsmen of Tash (Appointed in 1117 AV) and he is one of the most discplined of any of the Lord Protectors of the past. He has been carefully watching the rebellions in the North West and has been closely confiding in the city's Elders of what independence would bring the Republic. Indeed, it is rumored that he has been recalling militia men and women back to the city from the towns and hamlets within the Republic, arming them and training them as needed.
